“With yesterday’s vote, the Albanian people welcomed the democratic world and Europe”, declared the incumbent Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, on 23 March 1992, one day after the March 22nd elections that brought to power, after decades of dictatorship, the first Albanian opposition party.
Many things have changed in Albania in these 20 years, but the motto “let’s make Albania like the rest of Europe” is the same.
The Democratic Party members will gather on 22 March 2012 in Tirana, for celebrating what the historical leader of the Democratic Party mjeksia, Sali Berisha, considers as the first day of the Albanian democracy, and that after 20 years finds Albania a NATO member, and the Albanians are no longer one of the poorest countries in the world, but citizens that can travel free to Europe.
“Today, compared to 20 years ago, the Albanian citizens have 20 times more motives for joining us. Offer them our invitation, our desire and our appreciation for their energy, their contribution and their mind for turning into reality the Democratic Party’s project, that of a European Albania”, Berisha declared.
Reflecting on what has changed in these 20 years, Berisha noted the strenth of the Albanian for replacing despair with optimism, under the motto “Albania can be realized”.
“Most of them believed that Albania could be realized, but the ones who didn’t believe this were innumerous. The truth is that it was a Hamletian time, and if you refer to the unimaginable exoduses, they were a result of the answer that Albania cannot be realized. The 20 years proved that Albania can be realized and will be realized, with the greatest determination and speed, by consolidating the rule of law even more, i.e. the freedom of the Albanians”, Berisha declared.
Inviting the youth to join the Democratic Party, Berisha declared that this will be the day when the political force that he leads will start the unofficial preparations for the next electoral campaign, with the ambitious goal to achieve a victory like 20 years ago.
